Magic Keep Gortat

Magic Retain Gortat

In a surprising move, the Orlando Magic matched the 5-year, $34 million offer sheet presented to Marcin Gortat by the Dallas Mavericks, and retained the services of the back-up center.

It is a questionable move as this puts the Magic further into luxury tax threshold, as they could possibly pay out as much as $10 million.

One thing is for certain, the Magic made sure they kept a formidable frontcourt by this move, perhaps in reaction to the Cavs signing Shaquille O'Neal.

The Lakers big men were a big part in slowing down Howard in the NBA finals, so it was integral the Magic didn't have a thin frontcourt coming into next season.

But the signing of Brandon Bass was to have addressed the issue. Now with Gortat, it seems to be insurance; expensive coverage at that.

I don't understand were more players aren't flocking to Orlando in droves. Florida has NO STATE INCOME TAX, unlike NY and such. I take it his signing is bittersweet to you, huh? I guess he's the best center NOW rather than LATER.

Yeah, exactly. Back in the day, Tracy McGrady was estatic to be leaving Canada (Toronto Raptors) to the Magic. I am not sure, no state income tax is great. I like the signing, it just sucks for him on a personal level as he won't develop into his own person, and be a perennial backup for most of his career. But I am hearing he could be used as trade bait as the season progresses.... so, we will see!
